Instead of focusing on foodborne illness to the exclusion of other objectives, the authors say a superior approach would be “co-management” for food safety and ecological health together. Co-management is quite different from the precautionary principle. With the precautionary principle, food producers carry the full burden of proving that their food is safe. With co-management, the burden of proof is split: advocates for a food safety measure must show some evidence that the measure is effective and not too harmful to the environment.
